To answer technical questions, well, I generally try to lay down all the main areas of colors and values first, next to each others, being careful of balancing warms and cools as best as possible, before refining the details in each area (and this painting being just a study, and pretty small, I didn't refine it very much, you can even see the grain of the board).
This kind of technique is a very traditional one, and is actually well explained by Craig Mullins in his tutorials (even though he uses more digital than traditional and all the tricks that digital can offer, the core of the technique is always the same).
