interesting... i was about to say: not the most visually interesting piece (even for a person generally turned off by eyecandy) The center of the composition also seems to be in an awkward place? Would really like to see how this looked formatted with type etc.

I'm kinda curious to read the book now, usually fantasy book cover's have the main chacter. Did you get a choice in the cover design or where you told to paint a scene like this? I'm curious.

It's a pity that it's going to get covered up with type. :(
I really like the volumetric sky on this. The lighting on the mountains gives this a nice sense of depth.

My only criticism is the 'temple' kind of looks like its popped up from the mountain.
maybe its the density of the foliage on top of the 'temple'.
But, if thats what the client wants....what can you do :)

good stuff.

Good Work
Actualy great work.....but why is it the cover of a book about trolls?
Is that a temple where trolls live or make spells?
i would like to know what the book is about to put it in a proper context.

I love your pictures greatly. They are mythtic and grandise. The colors and linework of your landscape paintings are so wonderful. Not to say the really wonderful taste of choosing colors of different greens, dusty yellow and grey purple. They have really presented here the fully atomosphere of a beautiful dream world, balanced, comprehensive. I just do not have enough words to describe my feelings toward them. Do you have a collective publication of some of your art? It would be really great to have some bigger images of them ^_^

Actually, I am learning to draw and paint these days. Maybe it is too late for a gradstudent. Yet I am just amazed by the world created by fantasy illustrators like you. To be even one-step closer to the world created by you guys are my eventuall purpose. Amazed by your paintings, I am studying every one of them to learn color selection and matching. It is really very helpful. Thank you for sharing your work.

One thing interesting is coparte your digital pictures like this one to those done with traditional medias like oil and acrylic colors. Copare the dark blue-purple clouds of this picture with those in your "Mount of the Immortals" it is not hard to tell the digital clouds are not as transparent and vivid-light as the acrylic one. Is it intentionally done like this, or is it just hard to draw clouds as light and floaty as on canvas? (They seem a little bit congregated, forming heavier clusters in the picture above.)

Also, compared with the oil paint "The Gate", the grass land on the background mountains are drier, more harsh, not as warm and soft-seeming, as if could be felt by hand. Is it because your purpose in the picture above is trying to describe a harsher and colder platue world?

Yet the foreground shining rock-bed is extremely wonderful and fantastic. I cannot say more about it. Its just beyond imagination.

Hope to see more of your new tries. Have a wonderful night!^_^

Awesome work. It's been fascinating to see how you've gone from Oils and Acrylics to the digital medium almost seamlessly. Only thing that comes to mind is that this doesn't seem as saturated as alot of your traditional work.

"elfling" pointed out alot of what I was thinking. (and phrased it better too ;D)

Anyway, awe-inspiring as usual!

Thanks for the comments, guys. To answer a few questions, yes, the art director didn't want any characters in the pictures, and yes, the "temple" is supposed to have "popped out" of the hill. It's the entrance of the troll place.
As for the colors, I actually desaturated the image on purpose here compared to what it was originally: for some reason, the greens were going crazily oversaturated on this site, and I still don't know why.
Wow, elflling, thanks for the long email. Yes, you're right, it's not easy to make the two medium look alike. But you have to consider that it's not necessarily meant to be either. In any case, good luck with your own endeavors.
Thanks all for the messages.

I feel SO ripped off right now. I have the book, and it's a door. just a picture of a door with holes in it to depict the mill's doors. and I know it's meant to pop up out of the hill. and... damn I feel ripped off.
